Homelessness is a complex issue, and one that goes far beyond people sleeping rough.

It can start with a missed rent payment, a rental increase, job loss, or an unexpected hardship.

On World Homeless Day, we want to shine a light on the real stories behind the statistics, helping everyone better understand and support those facing homelessness and hardship. With more Kiwis forced into these difficult situations, your support is crucial to help us be there for those who need us most.

Help friends and whānau like Kenny feel seen and supported

“Things can change so quickly. No one is immune to homelessness – you could be a lawyer today and living in your car tomorrow.’” Katt, Orange Sky Tūao (Volunteer)

One of our friends, Kenny, knows this all too well.

Being on the streets is never going to be easy. Time is always against you.”

For Kenny, those words aren’t just a reflection - they’re a daily reality. As a man in his forties, Kenny has been experiencing homelessness since the start of this year after three years of unemployment. His connection with Orange Sky goes back to 2018, when he first came across the service while living outside the city. After some time away, Kenny returned to Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland in 2023, and Orange Sky quickly became a regular and reliable part of his life once again.

“When you’re in the CBD, you’ve got to dress appropriately. Not having a shower keeps me away from interacting. Sometimes I’d wait until the evening to come out. But clean clothes and a shower give me confidence again.”

Everyone needs connection.

A big part of what brings Kenny back each week is the heart and soul of the service – Orange Sky tūao. You can’t say anything bad about the volunteers; they always show love. Since 2018, they’ve always looked out for us. I don’t really fraternise much with anyone on the streets, so every time I bump into Orange Sky, I’m grateful.”

Kenny’s story reminds us how quickly life can change and how powerful your support can be. Your generosity can help ensure that there is always an Orange Sky chair to support our friends and whānau doing it tough. If you can, please consider donating today.
